The women who gathered at the Qilalugaq Camp, near Puvirnituq, in the summer of 2005 pledged their support to strengthen the voice of Nunavik women. The Saturviit Inuit Womens Association was created with the mandate to promote the interests of women in Nunavik. An action plan was developed — steps towards the hopes that women at Qilalugaq Camp expressed for all women of Nunavik.
The goals of this Action plan included: women becoming more involved in decision-making for their communities, in regional organizations, and in the Nunavik government; finding better ways to counter violence, abuse and suicide; finding ways to promote healing, positive parenting, nurturing families and healthy communities; and helping Nunavik women to access programs, resources and services available to them. In addition, Saturviit is an advocate for children’s rights.
The Association is open to all women age 16 and over who are JBNQA beneficiaries. For those who don’t meet the criteria, and for organizations wanting to be connected with Saturviit, associate membership is available. Membership is free and offers newsletters, announcements about activities, and invitations to participate in events. Members have the opportunity to be directly involved in projects and can sit for election to the board of directors.
